The Northern region of Fiji is well-known to divers but most surfers tend to stay closer to Fiji’s more celebrated waves, Taverua and Nomotu. For those willing to venture a bit farther, the reward is there. The search for perfect waves is always part of my mission and I want to share another
true gem we have unearthed.
A small island called Qamea and a perfect peeling right lies within a short flight from Fiji’s international Nandi Airport. Looking for a barrel, then sit deep on a 6 foot swell and you will find it. For those who want a more mellow experience, the shoulder of Maqai Reef provides a fun wall into a happy ending channel. The short and flat coral reef that lies below is described as forgiving. I call this an equal opportunity wave because it can provide for a big fun factor on multiple surf levels without too much risk.
Within a quick, five minute boat ride of this wave, we found another gem. Waruka Resort is a relatively new, small eco-boutique hotel. It reminds us of Nihiwatu in the early days; quaint, private bungalows in a remote jungle preserve. The resort also has a small wave directly out front that peels right and left, perfect for quick surfs and fun for the whole family. This family owned resort is into personal service and and providing an amazing guest experience. The restaurant serves up a vast array of South Pacific and fusion delicacies with all produce coming directly from the ocean or the onsite organic farm.
Outside of the surf, the fishing and diving in this region of Fiji is world-class. Water falls, nature hikes, SUPing, village tours are part of the many excursions that are offered to Waruka guests. With direct, overnight flights to Fiji’s main airport from LAX and SFO, this destination is prime for a surgical strike, or a week to ten day visit. This region has two distinct surf seasons from November to March, and May to October. Fiji’s summer season (our northern hemi winter) is associated with the conditions known as ‘marine tropical’ – glassy or light winds all day and hot with afternoon showers. This is the ideal time period for surfing Maqai Reef.
The best part of Waruka Resort is the affordability factor. Private bures start at $360 USD per night per couple with 3 meals a day. This Robinson Crusoe-eque place does not bill itself as a luxury resort. However, the beauty of the location and the creative building with local materials gives it the feeling of an undiscovered paradise. This whole package of empty waves, a beautiful tropical setting and great food equals true luxury in my book. Come visit Waruka and experience the magic of Fijian waters.
